Sanyo Epson Imaging Devices Corporation ("Sanyo Epson") has entered into an agreement with BOE HYDIS Technology Co., Ltd. of South Korea to license BOE HYDIS' wide viewing angle technology for liquid crystal displays, called AFFS (Advanced Fringe Field Switching). Sanyo Epson will combine AFFS with its own mobile technologies to develop new wide viewing angle technology, with the aim of commercializing the next generation of high-resolution small and medium-sized LCDs in the first quarter of fiscal 2006 (April to June).
The fusion of telecommunications and broadcasting through digitization and the seamless integration of cable and mobile communication in the network society have raised expectations for displays on mobile devices. There is high demand for mobile devices with small and medium-sized LCDs that have high resolution, a wide color gamut, a wide viewing angle, and quick response, as well as being light, compact, and ultra energy-efficient.
Responsible for the 13 (imaging on glass – mobile displays) section of the Epson Group's SE07 mid- to long-range corporate vision, Sanyo Epson is dedicated to the development of pioneering products and technologies based on the concept of supplying clear, user-friendly displays that can be used anytime, anywhere. These include the Photo Fine Chromarich wide color gamut technology unveiled in October 2005, which achieves over 100% coverage of the NTSC color gamut.
As part of its HCL-S technological development strategy (High quality, Compact design, Low power consumption, System solutions), Sanyo Epson will leverage AFFS technology to develop products with greater added value and to shorten lead times by enhancing its wide viewing angle technology. AFFS achieves a wide viewing angle of 180 degrees from left to right and top to bottom, maintaining high contrast and reducing power consumption without lowering the brightness thanks to an improved transmittance. It was chosen because it fulfills all the necessary criteria for small and medium-sized LCDs, particularly those for use in mobile devices.
Sanyo Epson will develop new wide viewing angle technology by combining AFFS with its own technologies for mobile devices, including innovative alignment film and liquid crystal material, with the aim of commercializing the next generation of high-resolution small and medium-sized LCDs in the first quarter of fiscal 2006.
Sanyo Epson believes that AFFS takes wide angle viewing technology to a new level by applying it to the production of small, high-resolution LCDs. It boosts viewing angles for LCDs used in mobile phones and other portable devices, while also achieving high transmittance and low power consumption. The combination of AFFS and our Photo Fine Chromarich technology will enable Sanyo Epson to provide LCDs with ultra-natural colors that faithfully reproduce colors from all viewing angles.
Based on the concepts of the HCL-S strategy, Sanyo Epson will continue to develop clear, high-resolution displays that can be used anytime, anywhere as it strives to be the number one manufacturer of small and medium-sized LCDs.

About AFFS
AFFS enables wide viewing angle of 180˚ (left/right/upper/lower) and no color shift is detected from a change in the viewing angle. Also, high contrast ratio can be gained with this technology. For these features, it shows outstanding image quality compared to conventional LCD. In addition, it can sharply reduce the power consumption of LCD without lowering the brightness by improving transmittance ratio. Now it is said that AFFS is one of the best solutions for LCD TV as well as mobile applications such as cellular phone, PDA, tablet PC and notebook PC, where wide viewing angle and fascinating image are essential requirements.
